Bachelor's in Biomedical Sciences


Overview

The Bachelor's in Biomedical Sciences provides core training in basic sciences and life sciences. This is the ideal course for those keen to understand, analyse and solve medical problems. It combines the study of how the human body functions and its pathologies with a perfect understanding of biological, biochemical and molecular processes.


Course Structure

The first year of the programme begins by acquiring a scientific basis in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry and General Physiology, all of which are necessary to understand the remainder of subjects taught throughout the programme.

To fully grasp the subject matter, students are required to attend as many lectures as practical activities (lab sessions, for exemple). Support for success is an initiative that has also been put in place to assist students in their studies and includes remdial activities and spot tests on the pratical activities.

The second and third year are fully dedicated studying biomedical sciences.

In the second year, students will study "Normal States in Human Beings" covering aspects of physiology, histoloy, anatomy, biochemistry and  molecular sciences.

In the third year, pathological aspects will be addressed for each discipline. Teaching has been arranged as such so that there is a smooth continuity between the two years.

The programme covers various disciplines, such as immunology, neurophysiology and toxicology.

A third of the course is practical work. Students also have the opportunity to carry out placements in analytical laboratories and university research laboratories..

English is taught in each year of Bachelor's to prepare students for scientific practice in English.


Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • address a scientific problem, understand it, and hypothesise about its final outcome
  • use all the scientific bases acquired in order to address specific disciplines, such as oncology and molecular imaging
  • work in an experimental laboratory.

Achieving this Bachelor's can lead to studying for the Master's in Biomedical Sciences (research focus), or for the Master's in Biochemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology with a specialist focus on Molecular Physiopathology (a UMONS-ULB collaboration).
