Holder of an engineering degree from the Faculty of Engineering of Mons (FPMS), Calogero Conti began his research career focusing on the metallurgy of non-ferrous metals and defended his doctoral thesis in 1982. He then moved to the Department of Rational Mechanics in which he carries out his teaching activities that focus first and foremost on the dynamics of mechanical systems and mechanical vibrations. His research from 1978 to 1985 focused on liquid metal treatment processes and the simulation of multibody mechanical systems and analysis of mechanical vibrations. Until 2006, he led a research team whose main scope was on the transport sector, namely the stability of vehicles and the impact of rail and road traffic on the vibration environment.
He was Dean of the FPMs from 1997 to 2001 and then Rector of the FPMs from 2006 to 2009 before assuming his first term as Rector of the University of Mons (UMONS) since its creation in 2009 until 2014.
In 2009, he contributed to the creation of the Pôle Hainuyer, bringing together higher education institutions and art schools of Hainaut, and chairs the Board of Directors. He has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Materia Nova Research Centre since 2009. He also chaired the Conseil d’Académie de l’Académie Universitaire Wallonie-Bruxelles (2006-2008, 2010-2012) which grouped together the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the (former) Faculty of Engineering of Mons (FPMs) and the (former) University of Mons-Hainaut (UMH) from 2004 to 2009, followed by ULB and UMONS since 2009.
He is also a member of the Conseil d’Administration du Conseil wallon de la Politique Scientifique, the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique, the Centre de Recherche Multitel, the Centre de Recherche Inisma, de l’Invest Mons-Borinage-Centre Spinnova and the Orchestre Royal de Wallonie in Mons.
On account of the “Paysage” decree (the new decree on higher education in Wallonia since September 2014),  he is now a member of the Conseil d’Administration de l’Académie de Recherche et d’Enseignement supérieur, which was established in 2014, as well as President of the Assemblée générale du Pôle hainuyer décrétal.

As a trained psychologist, Bernard Harmegnies undertook a PhD programme at the Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPSE). His doctoral thesis was on the objective analysis of voice quality. His teaching duties is two-fold: he focuses on training in experimental research and quantitative approaches in social sciences (statistics and metrology), and on language sciences. He has assisted with the teachings of several non-university higher education institutions (Conservatoire de Mons, Hautes écoles Condorcet and Léonard de Vinci) and several universities (ULB, University of Lisbon, Autonomous University of Barcelona).
He is the Head of the Phonetics Laboratory, composed of a multidisciplinary team who, using a resolutely transdisciplinary approach, concentrate primarily on the study of cognitive processing in human language. Research in this field is currently undergoing developments through partnerships with the corporate world and the health sector. Bernard Harmegnies has chaired the FNRS Committee of Psychological and Pedagogical Sciences, and he is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Graduate School for Psychology and Educational Sciences. His research activities have provoked partnerships with various overseas laboratories (at the universities of Paris 3, Toulouse-Le Mirail, Barcelona, Strasbourg, and Montreal, to name a few).
Coming from UMH, he has also held a number of managerial responsibilities, including being the President of the UMONS Research Institute for Language Science and Technology, as well as the Vice-President of the CISH, Academic Secretary of the University, and Dean of the UMONS Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPSE) for six years. From 2006 to 2009, he held the presidency of the Conference of Deans of the FPSE. As part of the transition linked to the creation of UMONS, he has served on the Council of Rectors and as a member of the Collège rectoral at the Interuniversity Council of Francophone Universities. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Pôle Hainuyer, and a substitute member of the ARES Council.

Marc Demeuse

Marc Demeuse is a Doctor in Psychological Sciences and a Statistician. He was a researcher in the Department of Experimental and Theoretical Pedagogy at ULg for more than twelve years. His doctoral thesis focused on priority education policies in Francophone Belgium. He received several grants that allowed him to collaborate with the universities of Nijmegen and Burgundy where he remains a visiting professor. He has been teaching at the University of Mons since 2004 and is responsible for initial and continued teacher training. His research focuses on this area, as well as on the analysis and assessment of education systems, the development of educational tools and the analysis of educational policies.
He is Head of the Department of Methodology and Education at the UMONS Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPSE). He is also a member of the Commission de Pilotage de l’enseignement, the Conseil d’administration de l’Institut de Formation en Cours de Carrière (French Community of Belgium), and the Network of Experts on Social Aspects of Education and Training (NESET, European network).
He chairs the Conseil d’École de l’École supérieure du professorat et de l’éducation in Lorraine and is involved in the teacher training monitoring committee in France.

Ruddy Wattiez

With a PhD in Chemical Sciences, Ruddy Wattiez has forged a career as a researcher in the field of chemistry but more specifically in biochemistry and protein chemistry. A graduate of the former UMH, he obtained his PhD in 1990. He then carried out many training placements in foreign institutions, such as the Beckman Research Center (USA) and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) of the Biosciences and Biotechnology Institute of Grenoble. After being appointed qualified FNRS researcher, he became Head of the Proteomics and Microbiology Unit in 2007 and Professor in 2011. Over the years, his expertise in protein chemistry has led him to forge many links with foreign institutions including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), UC Berkeley (USA), the University of Stirling, the Institut Pasteur in Paris and the European Space Agency. He also created the Belgian Association of Proteomics and the UMONS Research Institute for Biosciences, of which he was Chairman for almost 4 years. Since 2012, he has been scientific director at the Materia Nova Research Centre.

Giuseppe Pagano

A Doctor of Applied Economic Sciences, Giuseppe Pagano leads the Department of Public Finance and Taxation. His research interests include economic policy, national accounts, public finance at local and regional level, and regional economy. Giuseppe Pagano was Chairman of the Interfaculty Centre for Human Sciences from 2003 to 2006, then Dean of the Warocqué School for Business and Economics (FWEG) from 2006 to 2009. Thanks to his quality approach, the FWEG received ISO certification in 2003. He was general coordinator of Law for the University of Mons from 2004 to 2009. He is also the general coordinator of the University's second site in Charleroi.
His expertise led him to be a member of the High Council of Finance from 2006 to 2011 and the Scientific Committee of the Institut des Comptes nationaux since 2001. At the request of the Walloon Government, he coordinated a group of scientists whose work is the basis of the Marshall Plan 2022 and has designed the strategy and the regional operational programmes for the 2014-2020 scheduling of ERDF and ESF funds. Since 2013, he has contributed to training at the École d’Administration Publique. He is also regularly contacted by French and Flemish media.

Alain Vande Wouwer

Upon completion of a European doctoral thesis, prepared partly at the University of Stuttgart and partly at the UMONS Faculty of Engineering (FPMs), and a post-doctorate at the Université Laval in 1994, Alain Vande Wouwer became a member of the UMONS Automatic Control Laboratory, which he now heads.
His research focuses on mathematical modelling, optimisation, estimation and control of biological systems and bioprocesses, including research areas developed within the BIOSYS Centre, where he ensures coordination, and also within the DYnamical Systems Control and Optimization (DYSCO).
His research and teaching have led him to forge collaborations with colleagues from several foreign universities over the years, especially through FNRS-CNPq, FNRS-CONACYT, WBI-Québec, CUD, and Erasmus programmes. These collaborations have resulted in numerous exchanges as part of sabbaticals, post-doctorates, preparing theses or internships, seminars and courses. Alain Vande Wouwer has also been involved in the development of agreements between UMONS and other universities, such as the convention de double diplôme in engineering with the Université Catholique de Valparaiso (PUCV)

Marc Labie

Marc Labie has spent most of his career at our institution since he is a graduate of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation (FTI-EII) as well as the Warocqué School of Business and Economics (FWEG), where he teaches Analysis of Organisations and Management. His research focuses on the management of non-profit organisations, with a special interest in microfinance organisations in developing countries and governance issues.
Specialised in microfinance, he co-founded and co-leads the European Research in Microfinance Centre (CERMi), bringing together forty international researchers in this field, and co-edited in 2011 "The Handbook of Microfinance" published by World Scientific Publishing. He is involved in several international partnerships and was able to complete his training during visits to several foreign universities including Harvard University, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the University of Salamanca. In addition, convinced that the University must also be a place of reflection and cultural discoveries, he has been the secrétaire-trésorier de l’Extension of the University since 2000.

Pierre Duez

A Pharmacist and a Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pierre Duez managed the Laboratory of Pharmacognosy, Food Science and Human Nutrition at ULB for more than 10 years. Appointed full time at UMONS in 2013, he has created the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy. His team, specialising in the study of natural products, isolates the active principles of plants selected by ethnopharmacology and characterises them structurally and pharmacologically. He is member of the Traditional Chinese Medicines Unit of the European Pharmacopoeia, as well as member of the Belgian Pharmacopoeia Commission, Belgian Commissions for the Registration of Veterinary and Herbal Medicines, Good Practices in Traditional Chinese Medicines Research Association (on the management committee), and the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (subcommittees post-marketing pharmaceutical analysis and monitoring). Active since 1982 in development cooperation (Algeria, Argentina, Burkina Faso, Uganda, DR Congo, China, Rwanda, Madagascar, and Vietnam), Pierre Duez has participated in many projects and been (co-)promoter of theses for students from the South. He supervises at the Institutional Support Department (AI) at the University of Lubumbashi and supervises a Research Project for Development (PRD) for the Universities of Ouagadougou and Lubumbashi.

Christian Delvosalle

Christian Delvosalle is a chemical engineer and a Doctor of Applied Sciences at the FPMs where he heads the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering. He is also President of the UMONS Research Institute for the Science and Management of Risks.
Vice-President of the Walloon Movement for Quality, he has an active role in the fields of engineering chemical processes, total quality management and industrial safety. He created the Major Risk Research Centre, which is part of the FPMs, and has acquired a real international reputation on account of being involved in many European, federal, regional and industrial contracts. A member of the Scientific Council of Ionising Radiation drawn from the Belgian Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) for the period 2009-2015, he is also on the Ethics Committee of the National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks (INERIS) in France. For almost twenty-five years, Christian Delvosalle has been heavily involved in the field of continuing education. In 1989, he created the first (and still the only) graduate training programme in Quality Management in Wallonia. He has coordinated the training programme "Prevention Advisor" Level I at the Faculty for many years.

Christine Renotte

A graduate in Electrical Engineering and a Doctor of Applied Sciences of the UMONS Faculty of Engineering (FPMs), Christine Renotte works in the Automatic Control Laboratory. Her research focuses on modelling, simulation, analysis and control of dynamic processes, particularly in the field of rational utilisation of energy. Her interest in university pedagogy has led her to take on the role of co-director and then director of the QAP-Polytech Unit, where her focus lies on design and implementation of measures to promote success for students, especially first years. President (2008-2011) and then Vice President (2011-2013) of the Centre for Didactics in Higher Education (CDS) for the (former) Brussels Alliance for Research and Higher Education (AUWB), she was the teacher training coordinator (which included advisory and training missions) and coordinated actions on the reflection of support aids for success. As a member of the “Aide à la Réussite” Commission of the Pole Hainuyer, she was president from 2009 to 2013. Christine Renotte has also been actively involved in welfare cells both for students and staff of the University. She was elected Vice-Dean of the FPMs for the period 2014-2018.

Catherine Gravet

Lecturer at the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation – School of International Interpreters (FTI-EII), Catherine Gravet has taught here since 1997. She coordinates the French Department and created the Department of Written Communication, which she also heads. A graduate of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), she has worked in Morocco, as well as at the Universities of Caceres, Granada (Spain) and Pécs (Hungary). Her PhD thesis was on French Literature and Comparative Literature at the Université Paul-Verlaine (renamed the Université de Lorraine) in Metz, France, where she is a member of the Scriptures research group. She is also a member of the research group in University literacies of ULB (LUDES). Her research focuses mainly on the history of Francophone Belgian literature and the history of translation. As a member of several academic associations, she invests her time at the UMONS Interdisciplinary Centre for Philosophical Studies (Ciéphum), which publishes the International Symbolism Notebooks. As President of the UMONS Library Board, in 2013, she led “Mons & Hainaut”, the exhibition and the catalogue. In 2014, she was appointed “Personne de contact Genre” and President of the UMONS think-tank Genre.s.

Chantal Poiret

Chantal Poiret holds a Master's degree in Physics and a PhD in Sciences. Subsequently an I.I.S.N. researcher and then a research assistant, she has conducted research in the field of high energy physics and elementary particles. Since 2009, she has been the head of the Department of Information and Communication Technology at the Warocqué School of Business and Economics, having been Coordinator and then Director of the University's Centre de Calcul et d’Informatique. Her objective is to ensure user satisfaction by providing users high-quality central services and efficient means of communication. She has been heavily involved in the broadband network deployment project on optical fibres, which connects the University campuses in Mons with the establishment of many strategic administrative applications. 
Chantal Poiret's various functions have allowed her to gain thorough knowledge of how the University functions and better identify the needs of different categories of users. These have proven advantageous within her responsibilities as the Head of IT for the whole University and for her teaching mission.
