Research Center in Information Technologies

The Research Center in Information Technologies focuses on the technologies for sensing, formatting, transmitting, processing and exploiting data, signals and information. Its expertise covers a wide multidisciplinary range of technological resources including electronics (hardware development, microelectronics), computer science, and transmission systems such as telecommunication networks.

Historically, the research center emerged from a cooperation of several departments of the University, joining forces to address the needs of large scale research projects in a more comprehensive manner. Significant highlights include:

  • 1995: "Objectif 1 Hainaut" with the co-creation of the innovation center MULTITEL, which became a private research center with official acknowledgement by the Walloon Region,
  • 2001: co-creation of the innovation center CETIC, which obtained the official acknowledgement by the Walloon Region too,
  • 2005: "Plan Marshall" with a participation in the transports and logistics areas through projects TRANSLOGISTIC and Lo-V-Wal, and in the space and aeronautics areas through project TELECOM,
  • 2007: "Numediart" with the creation of the NUMEDIART research institute in new media art in 2010.

The Information Technologies Research Center today brings together a critical mass of more than 60 full-time equivalent researchers, to which can be added more that 40 people from MULTITEL and more than 40 from CETIC. Interdisciplinary research and innovation is encouraged, gathering from several technological areas:

  • Electronics and Microelectronics,
  • Computer Science,
  • Telecommunications,
  • Information Processing, Data Analysis and Decision Support,
  • Signal Processing and Multimedia.
