Physics

Understanding and using the physical laws that govern the universe are part of the daily life of physicists at the UMONS Faculty of Science. They are involved in numerous research activities and often work in international collaborations. They are working towards the unification of fundamental interactions, studying nuclear structure and the structure of the atom and the chemical composition of stars, exploring the physics of black holes like that of our universe, designing new materials and methods in order to study them, and contributing to advances in medical imaging. UMONS physicists can even be found at the South Pole, where they track short-lived extragalactic neutrinos. It is a stimulating and enriching environment that still remains on a human scale.

The Bachelor programme in Physics provides a solid foundation in physics, mathematics and chemistry, while being open to technologically advanced sectors such as particle physics, astrophysics and materials science.

The Master programme offers two subspecialisations:

  • the research focus allows students to choose between research in the field of fundamental interactions and research in materials science and its applications, including in an industrial setting;
  • the teaching focus leads to secondary school teacher certification.

Placements and a thesis finish off your Master studies. You will be able to work in the private or public sector, in research or teaching. In particular, each of these programmes opens the door for you to do a doctoral thesis.
