1st cycle: Bachelor's Degree in Biology

General description of the programme

The first cycle Bachelor's programme in Biology includes 180 credits spread over 3 years. This first cycle provides a solid foundation for dealing with biology in all its great diversity. These three years are the first step to attaining a Master's Degree in Biology.

Profile of the programme

The Bachelor's programme provides general training in biology. Levelling-up sessions are held to help first-year students adjust to university life. The second and third years of the programme open the door to the main disciplines in biology: biochemistry, zoology, cell biology, molecular biology, botany, ecology, ethology, genetics, physiology, neurobiology, microbiology, phylogeny, to name a few. Most courses involve practical work and field internships in Belgium or abroad: in 3rd year, for example, students spend one week in the Var region of France to further their knowledge in botany and entomology. Languages are also part of the Bachelor's curriculum. 30 hours of English classes are taught in second year and third year. This comprehensive coursework provides a solid foundation for later undertaking a Master's Degree in Biology.

1st year of the Bachelor's programme

Courses in the first year cover 4 disciplines: biology (28%), general and organic chemistry (32%), physics (27%) and mathematics applied to biology (13%). Substantial practical work and numerous exercise sessions are also part of the programme: they count for more than half of the coursework in first year.

2nd year of the Bachelor's programme

As of the second year, students will begin to deal with the different disciplines in biology, separated into two clusters: 1) biochemistry, molecular and cell biology (BMCB: 37%) and 2) biology of organisms and ecology (BOE: 47%). Both clusters have courses in English (5%) and statistics applied to biology (8%). Practical work and internships go along with the rest.

3rd year of the Bachelor's programme

The third year is intended to round out students' education in the fields of biology that belong to the BOE (42%) and BMCB (48%) clusters. If the English course mainly focuses on learning to write in second year, the 3rd year course (5%) mainly covers the oral aspects, thus preparing students for "scientific workshop training" in the Master's programme.

The Bachelor's curriculum in biology is also geared towards practice. 53% of the time is devoted to practical work and field work, including one week in the Var region of France.

Key learning outcomes

The Bachelor's programme in biology will enable students to understand the foundations of the living world in all its diversity. Students will develop:

  • observation and analysis skills,
  • knowledge on the development and diversity of the main groups of organisms,
  • the capacity to carry out synthetic and critical thinking on topics in biology and on experimental approaches.

 

The Bachelor's programme will also give students practice in preparing and presenting spoken and written documents. After completing this curriculum, students will be able to acquire the other skills necessary for pursuing a Master's Degree.

Students who have a Bachelor's Degree in Biology have unlimited access to the various Master's programmes in biology.

Access to further studies

With a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, students can continue on to one of the Master's programmes in the field of biology  at UMONS or any university of their choice:

  • Master's Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology
  • Master's Degree in Biology of Organisms and Ecology.
