The Earth and Materials Area

The Earth and Materials Area was created in 1988 to provide an interactive interface between the Faculty of Engineering of Mons and the public.

A great heritage exists at the Faculty in the shape of mineralogical, petrographic and paleontological collections, as well as experimentation machines from different periods.

The Area is a window for this heritage, which has a new mission now that it is directed towards the general public.

Since its opening, the Earth and Materials Area has hosted numerous exhibitions. They can be classified into three categories.

  • So-called “One shot” exhibitions, with themes such as lightning, the scientific contribution of the French Revolution, Mendeleev's Periodic Table, Stones of Egypt.
  • Thematic exhibits like CALEXPO, a series of exhibitions dedicated to limestone extracted in the Province of Hainaut.
  • Artistic or other exhibitions under the direction of people other than scientists from the FPMs: Artconnexion, artists of the Faculty.

Single events can always be held.
