The role of the thesis supervisor

Once the candidate has decided to embark on the doctorate adventure, he has to choose a topic and a thesis supervisor.

According to your expectations, your affinities and the subject chosen, you should contact a member of the academic staff in order to find a thesis supervisor, with whom you define opportunities, organisation and methods of financing your doctoral studies. Feel free to make appointments with several professors to talk to them about the best options and the research that interests you most.

Doctorate

If you have an innovative project in mind and you wish to work on a specific subject, it is up to you to find a thesis supervisor who will guide you through the process of writing your thesis. The joint doctoral degree could prove to be a suitable solution in this case.

The master thesis: the good idea

The master thesis is a good way of getting a taste for what research is and of developing a liking for it. It is also an opportunity to show your thesis supervisor that you intend to begin a doctoral thesis and to define with him a research draft corresponding to the laboratory’s R & D topics. This project could be the extension of the research started at the time of the master thesis.

If your master thesis supervisor does not have a subject to suggest to you, he will commend someone to you who will be the most able to guide you through the writing of your thesis, depending on the field of research and your research interests.

The role of the thesis supervisor is threefold

The role of the thesis supervisor is threefold:

  • To ensure the scientific guidance of the candidate and to supervise his work's progress;
  • To train the candidate to research tasks: : he explains how to manage a research project, explains the rules of the laboratory as well as the scientific ethics; he acts as a guide and counsel and will be able to advise the doctorate candidate in his pursuit of scientific accreditation (research papers, conferences, etc.);
  • To support the future scientific career of the candidate. He can help the future doctor to specify his professional project.
