French Language Proficiency Test

Most of the courses offered at UMONS are taught in French, although some are offered in English. Therefore, students have to master both written and spoken French in order to attend classes.

In compliance with the legislation, students will have to take a French proficiency test in the following cases:



For admission to all Bachelor degree courses 
 

Exemptions:

  • Students who have any academic credentials issued in the French Community of Belgium or that confirm a sufficient command of the French language;
  • Students who have supporting documents that prove they have passed a Higher Education entrance exam that was taken in the French Community of Belgium.

To register on a teaching-focused Master's degree or for Higher Secondary Teaching Certification (AESS):

The purpose of this test and what it covers:

The French language proficiency test is intended to verify that students are able to express themselves effectively for work and examination purposes required for their degree programmes, and for any work experience schemes that they will be required to carry out in a secondary education establishment.

The test has two parts:

  • A written test: based on an oral presentation (approximate length: 15 minutes) or a printed text (maximum length: 2-3 pages ) on a general topic, students will prepare a summary (approximately 20 lines)
  • An oral test: a conversation based on the subject of the written test is intended to verify the students’ understanding of the initial presentation or text and to assess their aptitude for spoken communication.

 

Please note:

The French language proficiency test must be taken before the beginning of the first assessment period.

Students may not sit this examination more than two times during the course of an academic year.

The Transcript of Results of this French proficiency test is valid in all Higher Education institutions in the French Community of Belgium.


Practical information:

The exam  will take place 3 times at the University of Mons during the academic year 2016-2017:

  • 28th September 2016 - the French Language Proficiency Test for first cycle studies, and for teaching-focused Master's degrees and the AESS (Higher Secondary Teaching Certification);
  • 26th October 2016 - the French Language Proficiency Test for first cycle studies, and for teaching-focused Master's degrees and the AESS (Higher Secondary Teaching Certification);
  • 8th March 2017 - the French Language Proficiency Test for first cycle studies only.

The registration fee for the French Language Proficiency Test is €50, payable by standing order. Students will only be allowed to take the test once they provide proof of payment.
