Equivalence of Degrees and Other Qualifications

Equivalence means deciding whether a degree or other qualification obtained abroad is similar to a degree or qualification obtained at the same level in the French Community of Belgium.

Equivalence is granted on the basis of documents provided by the institution in which you studied.

According to the level of studies, the candidate should contact the following organisations:

Equivalence of School Leaving Certificates

Recognition of School Leaving Certificates (A-levels or equivalent; the C.E.S.S. in Belgium) can be granted by the Equivalence Service of the French Community of Belgium (website: Service Equivalences).

Such equivalence is necessary to register for any University Bachelor’s Degree (1st, 2nd and 3rd years). Without this equivalence, registration for any course of University study will not be authorised.

Equivalence of Master’s Degrees

Equivalence of Master's degrees (2nd cycle) is also granted by the Equivalence Service of the French Community of Belgium.

Equivalence is not necessary for entry to an Advanced Master’s Degree or for a University Doctorate (3rd cycle).

Equivalence of other Degrees and Qualifications

In all other cases, admission (and therefore the equivalence granted for the qualification providing access to studies) is granted by the Universities themselves. Examining boards establish the level of admission of the student on the basis of each individual application.
