1st cycle : Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpreting

General description of the programme

The Faculty of Translation and Interpretation- Ecole d' Interprètes Internationaux ensures the training of translators and interpreters.

During their studies, future bachelors in translation and interpretation acquire general linguistic and cultural knowledge which constitutes the foundation courses leading to the professionalizing master's degrees. Moreover, they get acquainted with translating and interpreting techniques and strategies. In addition, they get an overview on practice in these fields.

Profile of the programme

Bachelor studies in translation and interpretation are primarily centered on the pragmatic functions of language. Stress is laid on communication in a professional context and a contemporary environment.

The working language is always French. A comprehensive study programme is provided in German, English, Danish, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Russian. Introductory courses to foreign languages are also part of the programme. Optional courses are accessible in the aforementioned languages, as well as in Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Hungarian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese and Swedish.

After a first year centered on consolidating skills in the French language, on learning two foreign languages and extending their general knowledge, students are presented a more contrastive approach.

Classes and learning activities are directed gradually towards translating and interpreting as such. In addition to exercises specific to these fields, lectures, given in foreign language, focus on the cultural context.

In the last six-month period of the third year this linguistic and cultural immersion is completed by a study travel abroad, in a partner institution which concluded an Erasmus agreement with the University of Mons, or a six-month stay in linguistic immersion in a multilingual company or organization in Belgium.

Key-learning outcomes

However, the practical character of the education, in line with current social and economic trends, is appreciated by companies which are looking for multilingual administrative workforce.

Classes completed successfully can also be accredited in another Higher Education Institution and give place to precredits in the event of reorientation.
