Head of Unit: Professor Laurent Lefebvre

Presentation of the Cognitive Psychology and Neuropsychology Unit

Teaching: Epistemological areas addressed within the Unit’s teaching activities are particularly relevant to the modelling of the main cognitive functions (memory, language, executive functions, attention, praxis, and visual-spatial organisation) and the consequences of altering these on the behaviour of individuals. Through theoretical and practical courses, work placements and a Master thesis, the student develops their clinical skills with regard to neuropsychological diagnosis and cognitive support, as well as research in order to envisage practice in the field (hospitals, rehabilitation centres, health clinics, etc.) or research at a university.

Research: The Unit’s research focuses on the development and cognitive functioning of individuals. Among the ample research carried out within the Unit, particular focus is placed on language and, more broadly, verbal and non-verbal communication, executive functions, as well as the links between these two sets of functions. Through its research, the Unit’s aim is to improve both quality assessment of these skills and their revalidation. To do this, diagnostic methods and tools as well as targeted interventions have been developed. Those concerned by the Unit's research include children, adults, the elderly, the healthy, and those with neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric disorders.

The Unit’s fundamental research focuses on the understanding of language and executive mechanisms focuses on the behaviour of people with cognitive impairments, for example, patients with Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia or depression.

Services to Society:  Besides the many interventions at conferences and other public events, the Cognitive Psychology and Neuropsychology Unit organises neuropsychological consultations, assessments and care at the University Centre for Psychological Consultations (CUCP) of UMONS. These services are for both children with learning disabilities and adults with possible cognitive impairments.
