Bachelor's Degree in Engineering

It is possible to take a first year of the Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, specialization field : civil engineer in Charleroi

The natural objective of the programme is to give engineering graduates a solid scientific foundation. The basic sciences of chemistry, electricity, physics and mechanics constitute a significant part of the course. The comprehension and application of these subjects call for the assimilation of various tools: mathematics, computer science, geometry. The future engineer thus acquires the rigour essential to his or her future activities. This programme is the first stage which leads to the Master's degree of Engineering.

Profile of the programme

The engineer must know sciences , but also be able to apply them. On this principle, the second year introduces more technical courses: materials science, electrical machines, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, mechanics of structures, applied electronics, industrial process control…

The third year curriculum includes 34 specialized credits. The specialized courses   aim to help the student to acquire the basic knowledge in his/her focus.   The Bachelor’s degree entitles him/her to unconditional access, without any need for complementary studies, to the corresponding master's program:  chemistry and materials science, electricity, computer and management sciences, mechanics and mining and geology.

For these scientific or technical lessons, half the activities are dedicated to problem-solving classes or laboratory work. These activities illustrate lectures and help the students to better assimilate the theory and prepare them for their future job.

Creativity is intensively developed. As of the 2nd year, students will have to complete projects, which will increase in scale and demand more cross-disciplinary skills as the course progresses.

During their career, engineers cannot limit themselves exclusively to technical work. As for any university student, the knowledge of languages is an undeniable asset. English, an essential key to success, is mandatory throughout the first three years. At the end of the third year, students are evaluated on the basis of the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), an internationally recognized test in the business world. This will provide them with a significant advantage on the labour market.

In addition, lectures in economics as well as in the environment make the students aware of the social, ethical and environmental context in which they will exert their activities.

Key learning outcomes

At the end of this course programme, the students will be able to:

  • develop arguments with the required  rigour by putting into practice  the basic knowledge in scientific disciplines
  • use methods and mathematical and computing tools for engineering
  • approach  techniques and basic technologies for engineering, particularly in their focus
  • Implement competence and skills: critical spirit, autonomy, project management,  written and oral communication skills and professional teamwork qualities

Occupational profiles

The degree of Bachelor of Science in  Engineering Sciences: Engineering does not directly lead to employment. Most holders of this degree carry on studies which lead up to the Master degree of Science in Engineering in the following fields: chemistry and materials sciences, electricity, computer sciences and management, mechanics and geology and mining.

Access to further studies

The degree of Bachelor of Science in  Engineering Sciences: Engineering enables students to carry on their studies in the focus Master they have chosen as well as in any other Master offered by the Faculty.

The access to the Master of Science in  Architecture and Building Engineering is possible, after having passed a preparatory year (< = 60 credits).

The choice of the Bachelor of Science in  Engineering Sciences: Architecture is made in the first year. During this year, however, the proportion of courses specific to architecture is limited. The transition to the second year of the Bachelor of Science in  Engineering Sciences: Architecture thus remains possible, and vice versa.
