Presentation of the University of Mons

The creation of the University of Mons, founded on the association of the University of Mons-Hainaut and the Faculty of Engineering, consolidates the Mons Consortium.  As of  2009-2010, this body will take seat in the new academic landscape of the French-speaking Community.
The two institutions being based on standards of high quality research and education, they chose to join forces. 
The pooling of their potential will allow:

• development of the offer of higher education in Mons and Charleroi,
• increased cross-disciplinary education and training within certain degree programmes,
• reinforcement of the research centres and corresponding specialised training programmes,
• heightened presence on the international level,
  greater participation in the cultural and economic development of the area,
• reinforcement of the collaborations within an integrated consortium gathering around the University of Mons, the partners of the higher education institutions of the public network in Hainaut.

 The University of Mons is in the heart of a renovated city.

Mons is a cultural city with many activities: the fight of the Lumeçon (June) recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage, the International Love Film Festival (February). Mons is candidate to be the European capital of culture. There are several cinemas, 3 theaters and all the range of hotels, restaurants and coffee shops.
There are also shows throughout the year in the various districts.

UMONS is a member of the Brussels Alliance for Research and Higher Education along with ULB. Preferential agreements with ULB give students additional openings for certain degree programmes.
For example, the first cycle medicine programmes in Mons (3 years) give direct access to the second cycle in Brussels (doctoral degree in medicine). In the same way, the first cycle in human and social sciences in Mons (3 years) gives access to the second cycle at ULB in:

• political science
• workforce sciences
• anthropology
• human resources management
• sociology
• population and development sciences
• information and communication
• computer science and information technology

UMONS is also attentive to the education of adults. Lifelong training/learning programmes are mainly offered in Charleroi in the following fields:

• computer science 
• psychology and education
